Introducing Native Begonias as Ornamental Plants

Speaker: Ms Sam Yen Yen, Forestry Research Institute Malaysia (FRIM)
Date: Saturday, 10 March 2012
Time: 3.30 p.m.
Venue: YWCA, Jalan Hang Jebat, Kuala Lumpur

Synopsis: We have all seen and perhaps grown begonias; what we are less aware of is that there are 52 species of begonias native to Peninsular Malaysia. A number of these species are extremely decorative and have great potential as pot plants. Begonia is one of the plant groups selected for an on-going domestication programme at the Forest Research Institute Malaysia (FRIM).The domestication study is also in tandem with the conservation efforts on the threatened begonias currently carried out by FRIM. In this respect, home gardens can act as the guardian to the many species facing possible extinction.

So, come and see how you can do your bit in conservation while getting to enjoy these beautiful native ornamental species in the comfort of your home.

To defray the cost of renting the premises, as well as for providing refreshments, there will be a charge of RM10.00 for members and RM15.00 for non-members.

Please confirm your attendance with Margarette Wai (012-2870186) or Wai Ching (016-3097339)

About Us

The Selangor and Federal Territory Gardening Society is a non-profit organisation run by volunteers to create and promote an interest in gardening and an appreciation of our natural environment. The Society provides instruction in all aspects of gardening through talks, discussions, demonstrations and excursions. The Society also helps members in an advisory capacity.

Historical perspective
The Selangor Gardening Society as it was then known was founded by expatriates long before Merdeka. It became defunct in 1950 due to the lack of local support.

In the late ‘60s, a group of garden enthusiasts revived the society, starting off with a very small membership. Activities were then held at members' residences and at the Lake Garden nursery located directly below Carcosa at Swettenham Drive (now known as Persiaran Swettenham).

Society's activities
A schedule of events is prepared at the start of each year and the list is distributed to all members. Prior to each event, newsletters are sent out to remind members of the month's activities.

The monthly programme includes talks, field trips and practical demonstrations. Talks are presented on a wide range of subjects by speakers who are experienced in their own fields.

Subjects include basic gardening, landscaping, floral arrangements and other aspects of horticulture. These talks are held in clubs, hotels and sometimes at members’ homes (by invitation) on Saturday afternoons. When held at public venues, a fee is charged to cover the cost of rental and refreshments.

Field trips have proven to be very popular with members. Trips nearer home usually take place on Saturday afternoons. For places further afield, a weekend is set aside for the day trips.

Past events involving the Society include the ASEAN Orchid Show in the Philippines, a visit to the Bako National Park near Kuching, as well as the Orchid Show at Mandai Gardens in Singapore.

The Society has also participated in flower shows organised by local authorities, such as Pesta Flora and MAHA.

Since July 2005, the Society is collaborating with DBKL in organizing talks for every alternate month at the Galeri Taman Bunga Raya at Tasik Perdana, Kuala Lumpur. These talks which are open to the public as well as members serve as a vehicle to create public awareness and interest in gardening.

In addition, the Society publishes a modest newsletter called GREENFINGERS every four months. This newsletter provides gardening tips and topics of interest for gardening enthusiasts.

Dinners are organised to foster the spirit of fellowship among members. It is customary for the Society to hold a dinner after every Annual General Meeting. As the Society is entirely self-supporting, the event also incorporates a fund-raising drive to provide funds for various activities of the Society throughout the year.

It is hoped that the society would be able to increase its membership so that more Malaysians will be attracted to gardening as a worthwhile pastime and share in the rewards gained from this healthy lifestyle.

Executive Committee
The Executive Committee of the Society comprises the President, 1st and 2nd Vice Presidents, Hon. Secretary, Hon. Treasurer, Hon. Programme Secretary and six committee members.

Election for office bearers is held every two years at the AGM.

The Society welcomes all manner of help and advice from members as well as from non-members who are able to contribute towards the knowledge, art and science of gardening, and to promote greater interest in growing plants.
